What's New 30-acre island added to Detroit River wildlife refuge Detroit Free Press (4/24) The 30-acre Sugar Island was bought by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funding and is now part of the National Wildlife Refuge System. 4,200 acres along Lake Huron announced as Michigan's newest state park; features harbor The Republic (2/11) Recreation officials say 4,200 acres of land along the shores of Lake Huron have become Michigan's newest state park. New Ohio urban wildlife preserve opens on Lake Erie Demotix (2/6) An 88-acre urban wildlife preserve on the southern shore of Lake Erie provides a 1.3 mile loop walking trail through a former sediment disposal area. Great Lakes scientists educate communities; put research to work Great Lakes Echo (1/26) At the Lake Superior Estuarine Research Reserve, scientists study the usual Great Lakes issues – invasive species, pollution, habitat loss, and climate change. This research is then taken directly to the community, addressing local issues. West Michigan Underwater Preserve would protect 150 miles of shore waters The Holland Sentinel (1/2) A proposed West Michigan Underwater Preserve would protect more than 150 miles of southern Lake Michigan shore waters, highlighting shipwrecks and natural features popular with divers. Clay Cliffs grant OK'd for $5.8 million preservation project Leelanau Enterprise (12/15) The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board voted in Lansing to provide Leland Township and the Leelanau Conservancy with the largest of 13 grants awarded in Leelanau County since the program was authorized by voters in 1976.
